Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Pest Control Company
Ask these questions before you sign anything — what the answers reveal.
A brief conversation before hiring a pest control company tells you a great deal about what working with them will be like. Companies that answer these questions clearly and specifically are demonstrating competency and transparency. Companies that give vague, evasive, or scripted answers are showing you something important. Here are the questions worth asking.
"Are you licensed in Missouri, and can I get your license number?"
This is the baseline question. Missouri requires both company and individual applicator licensing for commercial pest control. A legitimate company answers this immediately and provides their license number without hesitation. They may also note that their technicians are individually licensed or supervised by a licensed applicator.
If the answer is hesitant, vague, or if they cannot provide a license number, stop the conversation. Do not hire an unlicensed pest control operator regardless of price.
"What exactly will you be treating, and what products will you use?"
A quality company should be able to name the areas they will treat (exterior foundation, window frames, interior cracks and crevices, under appliances, etc.) and identify the product category and active ingredient they plan to use. They do not need to recite the label verbatim, but "we use a residual pyrethroid — bifenthrin — on the exterior, and gel bait in the kitchen" is a specific, competent answer. "We use our standard solution" is not.
This question also gives you the information to do your own safety research on the products being applied in your home.
"What results should I expect, and on what timeline?"
Honest pest control companies give honest timelines. German cockroach elimination with professional treatment typically takes 4 to 6 weeks with follow-up visits. Mouse control requires ongoing monitoring until the population is eliminated. Ant problems may take several service visits before full resolution. A company that promises "we'll take care of it in one visit" for any complex infestation is either overselling or inexperienced.
"What is your follow-up policy if the problem isn't resolved?"
Does the company guarantee their work? Will they return for a re-treatment if the problem persists, and at what cost? What are the conditions of any service guarantee? Understanding this before signing tells you whether you are hiring a company that stands behind its work or one that collects payment and moves on regardless of outcome.
"Do you carry general liability insurance?"
Ask for a certificate of insurance. This protects you if their treatment causes any damage to your property. A reputable company provides this immediately.
"Have you worked on homes like mine in this area?"
For specific situations — a crawlspace home with brown recluse, a rural property with rodent pressure, an older home needing termite assessment — asking about experience with similar properties and similar problems gives you a sense of whether the company actually knows your situation or is learning on your property.
"Can you provide references from customers in my area?"
Local references from recent customers in your area are the most relevant quality indicator. Online reviews are useful but can be manipulated; a direct reference from a neighbor who has used the company for years is more valuable.
"What can I do to make the treatment more effective?"
A company that engages genuinely with this question — discussing sanitation, exclusion, moisture management, or preparation steps — is thinking about your actual outcome. A company that says "nothing, we handle everything" is missing an important part of effective pest control. Your cooperation in the treatment process matters, and a good company knows it.
