Fall Pest Prevention in Missouri: Preparing Before Winter

September and October are your best window — here's what to do before the invasion.

📅 Published May 2026 📋 Missouri & Seasonal

Fall is arguably the most important pest prevention season in Missouri. Multiple pest species — stink bugs, boxelder bugs, mice, and various fall invaders — are all simultaneously searching for winter harborage in September and October. Addressing the structural vulnerabilities they exploit during this narrow window prevents months of indoor pest problems through the winter. Once these pests are inside and established, removing them is significantly harder than excluding them before entry.

The Fall Prevention Window

The ideal timing for fall pest prevention work is mid-September through early October — after summer heat has passed but before the main fall migration pressure peaks. Stink bugs and boxelder bugs typically begin aggregating on warm walls in late September; mice begin serious indoor migration in October as field crops are harvested and outdoor temperatures drop. Exclusion work and perimeter treatments completed before these windows close are far more effective than the same work done after the invasion has begun.

Exterior Exclusion: The Priority Task

  • Inspect and caulk all gaps around window and door frames — stink bugs in particular exploit deteriorated caulk around windows to access wall voids. Run a bead of fresh caulk anywhere the existing caulk has pulled away, cracked, or dried out.
  • Check and replace door sweeps — inspect all exterior doors, particularly the garage service door and any basement doors, for gaps at the bottom. Replace worn sweeps before fall.
  • Seal utility penetrations — gaps around any pipe, wire, or conduit entering the foundation or walls. These are primary mouse entry points.
  • Screen attic and gable vents — inspect all attic ventilation for gaps or failed screens. Stink bugs, boxelder bugs, and mice all use attic spaces for winter harborage.
  • Check garage door bottom seal — the rubber seal along the bottom of the garage door. Even small gaps allow mouse entry. Replace if worn.
  • Check crawlspace vents — intact screens prevent both insect and rodent access.

Exterior Treatment

A professional residual treatment applied to the exterior in mid-September — particularly on south and west-facing walls, around all window and door frames, and along the foundation — kills stink bugs, boxelder bugs, and other fall invaders attempting to enter before they find their way in. This single treatment, timed correctly, reduces indoor fall invader problems dramatically. It also addresses the last significant ant and spider activity of the season and sets up residual protection heading into the mouse invasion period.

Rodent-Specific Fall Preparation

  • Set snap traps in the garage and basement in early October as a first-detection tool — catching the first mice to enter prevents them from establishing a nest before cold weather fully arrives
  • Remove food attractants from garage and storage areas — bird seed, grass seed, pet food — or transfer to sealed metal or thick plastic containers
  • Clear clutter from garage and basement floors that provides mouse harborage
  • If you are in a rural area adjacent to agricultural fields, consider pre-emptive professional rodent bait station placement before harvest season — the fall rodent pressure from harvest displacement is predictable and significant

Moisture and Landscape

  • Clean gutters in October after leaf fall — clogged gutters hold moisture that damages fascia and attracts carpenter ants
  • Remove leaf debris from the foundation perimeter as it accumulates
  • Ensure crawlspace vapor barriers and dehumidification are maintaining acceptable moisture levels before closing the space for winter
