Summer Pest Problems in Missouri: What to Watch For
Peak season pest pressure in central Missouri — what builds fast and what to watch.
June, July, and August bring the highest pest pressure of the year across central Missouri. Heat, humidity, and the cumulative effect of months of outdoor breeding cycles produce peak populations for most pest species. Here is what to watch for and when to act.
Mosquitoes and Ticks: Peak Health Risk Season
Missouri's summer months — particularly July and August — represent peak mosquito and tick activity. Both the health risk (tick-borne ehrlichiosis and RMSF, mosquito-borne West Nile virus) and the nuisance are at their highest. Key signs that action is needed:
- Finding ticks on family members or pets after outdoor activity in grassy or wooded areas
- Mosquito bites occurring in the yard during daylight hours — indicating Asian tiger mosquito activity, which bites aggressively day and night
- Mosquito activity dense enough to prevent comfortable use of outdoor spaces
If a mosquito and tick program is not already running, start in June — waiting until activity is at its peak in July means treating against an already-established population rather than preventing its buildup.
Ants: Kitchen and Structural Problems
Summer heat drives ant foraging indoors in search of moisture and food. Odorous house ant trails in kitchens are most commonly reported in summer. Watch for:
- Trails appearing in kitchens, bathrooms, or along baseboards — typically in early morning or evening when temperatures peak
- Large black ants (carpenter ants) appearing inside at night — particularly near windows or at ceiling level — suggesting a nearby nest associated with moisture-damaged wood
- New ant trails appearing after rain events — moisture-seeking behavior
German Cockroaches: Fastest Summer Growth
German cockroach reproduction is temperature-dependent — the developmental cycle is fastest in warm summer conditions (as short as 40 days from egg to adult at 85°F). Summer is when undetected light infestations become heavy ones with alarming speed. Early warning signs:
- Seeing cockroaches during daytime — indicates population density has pushed individuals out of harborage
- Finding droppings in cabinet corners or behind appliances for the first time
- A musty odor developing in kitchen or bathroom areas
Act immediately on any cockroach sighting in summer — a population that seems small in June can be severe by August.
Wasps and Hornets: Peak Nesting Season
Paper wasps, yellow jackets, and bald-faced hornets reach maximum colony size in late summer. Nests that were small and manageable in May are large and well-defended by August. Yellow jacket nests in the ground become particularly hazardous when disturbed by lawn mowing or foot traffic. Watch for:
- Increased wasp activity around specific areas of the exterior — eaves, window frames, or ground areas — indicating a nest is present
- Wasps entering and exiting a specific gap in the structure, suggesting a void nest inside the wall or soffit
- Yellow jacket activity near the ground in lawn areas — ground nests expand significantly through summer and are most aggressive when the colony reaches full size in August
Brown Recluse Spiders: Most Active at Night
Brown recluses are most active during warm months. Summer is when they are most frequently encountered, particularly as individuals venture from harborage to hunt at night. Finding multiple brown recluses during summer suggests a well-established population in the crawlspace or wall voids that warrants professional treatment before fall, when they begin moving toward more protected winter harborage inside the structure.
The Summer Action Principle
Summer pest problems escalate faster than any other season — warm temperatures accelerate reproduction cycles, and multiple pest species are simultaneously at peak activity. Problems identified in early summer are significantly easier and less expensive to address than the same problems left until fall. When you notice something new or worsening in summer, the right time to act is immediately.
