Rodent Droppings: Identification and What to Do
What rodent droppings look like, what they tell you, and how to clean them safely.
Rodent droppings are typically the first sign of an infestation and one of the most useful pieces of evidence for assessing the type, size, and activity level of the problem. Knowing how to read what droppings tell you — and how to clean them up safely — is practical knowledge for any Missouri homeowner.
Mouse Droppings: What They Look Like
- Size: 3–6mm — approximately the size of a grain of rice, slightly larger than a sesame seed
- Shape: Pointed at both ends, slightly curved
- Color: Fresh droppings are dark brown to black and have a slight sheen. Old droppings are gray, dry, and crumble to dust when touched.
- Quantity: A single mouse produces 50–75 droppings per day. Finding hundreds of droppings in a concentrated area is consistent with even a modest mouse population — do not assume a small number of droppings means a small infestation.
Mouse droppings are found most heavily in areas of concentrated activity: along runways close to walls, in cabinet corners near food sources, in drawer corners, and near nesting areas.
Rat Droppings: What They Look Like
- Norway rat droppings: 12–20mm — about three times longer than mouse droppings. Capsule-shaped with blunt rounded ends. Dark brown when fresh, gray when old.
- Roof rat droppings: Slightly smaller than Norway rat droppings — 12–13mm — with pointed ends (like a banana shape). Found in elevated locations if roof rats are present.
If you are unsure whether you have mice or rats, measuring a dropping against a ruler is the fastest way to distinguish between them — anything less than 8mm is certainly a mouse; 12mm or more is a rat.
What Droppings Tell You About the Infestation
Activity Level
The freshness of droppings indicates whether activity is current. Fresh droppings are dark, moist, and have a slightly shiny surface. To test whether an infestation is active: remove or clean up all droppings in a specific area, then return 24 to 48 hours later. New fresh droppings confirm current activity.
Location of Activity
The concentration of droppings identifies where rodents are spending the most time. Heavy dropping concentrations indicate runways, food sources, and nest proximity. This guides trap and bait station placement — always place control devices where dropping evidence is heaviest, not in random locations.
Population Size
While not a precise count, the volume of droppings gives a rough sense of population size. A few dozen droppings in one area suggests a small early infestation. Hundreds of droppings in multiple rooms indicates a well-established, larger population.
How to Safely Clean Up Rodent Droppings
Rodent droppings and urine can contain pathogens including hantavirus (from deer mice), Salmonella, and LCM virus. Safe cleanup minimizes your exposure:
- Ventilate the area for at least 30 minutes before entering — open windows and doors
- Wear rubber, latex, or vinyl gloves throughout cleanup
- Do not sweep or vacuum dry droppings — this raises dust that may be inhaled. Hantavirus is primarily contracted through inhalation of contaminated dust.
- Spray droppings with a disinfectant (diluted bleach solution — 1.5 cups bleach per gallon of water — or a commercial disinfectant) and allow to soak for 5 minutes
- Wipe up with paper towels and place in a sealed plastic bag
- Disinfect the area again after removal
- Double-bag all contaminated material and dispose of in an outdoor trash container
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after removing gloves
For large-scale cleanup in heavily infested attics or crawlspaces, consider professional remediation — these areas may have significant accumulations of droppings and urine-soaked insulation that should be removed with appropriate respiratory protection (N100 respirator).
