How Long Does Termite Treatment Take?

What to expect on treatment day and how long before termites are gone.

📅 Published February 2026 📋 Termite Control

One of the most common questions homeowners ask after scheduling termite treatment is: how long will this take, and when will the termites be gone? The answers depend on the treatment method used, the size of the home, and the size of the colony — but here is a clear timeline of what to expect at each stage.

Treatment Day: How Long Does the Work Take?

Liquid Barrier Treatment

For an average single-family home, a professional liquid termiticide application typically takes two to four hours. Larger homes, homes with slab foundations requiring extensive drilling, or homes with complex foundation configurations may take longer — up to a full day in some cases.

The process involves trenching along the exterior foundation perimeter, drilling through concrete (garages, porches, interior slabs), and injecting termiticide into the soil at specified depths and volumes. After treatment, trenches are backfilled and drill holes are patched.

Bait System Installation

Installing bait stations around the perimeter typically takes one to two hours for an average home. Stations are placed at regular intervals around the foundation, and no disruption to the structure is involved.

How Long Until Termites Are Eliminated?

Liquid Non-Repellent Termiticide

Modern non-repellent termiticides like Termidor work through a transfer effect — termites pass through the treated zone, pick up the active ingredient, and spread it through the colony through contact and grooming. This process takes time.

Most homeowners see a significant reduction in termite activity within 30 to 90 days of liquid treatment. Complete colony elimination may take up to 90 days or longer, depending on colony size. Larger, more mature colonies take longer to collapse than smaller ones.

You may actually see more termite activity in the first few weeks following treatment as the colony is disrupted. This is normal and expected — it does not mean the treatment is not working.

Bait Systems

Bait systems work more slowly than liquid treatments. Stations first need to be discovered by foraging termites, then bait cartridges are installed and carried back to the colony. Colony elimination via bait can take three to six months or longer. Bait systems are generally better suited for long-term monitoring and as a supplemental layer to liquid treatment rather than as a standalone fast-elimination method.

How Long Does Protection Last?

Professional-grade liquid termiticides applied correctly in adequate soil conditions typically remain effective for five or more years. Annual inspections are recommended to verify the barrier is intact and no new activity is present.

Bait monitoring systems provide ongoing protection for as long as they are maintained — stations should be checked and serviced on a regular schedule (typically quarterly) to maintain effectiveness.

When Can You Re-Enter the Home?

Liquid barrier treatment is applied to the soil exterior and foundation — it does not require you to vacate the home. Residents can typically stay in the home during and after treatment. The technician will advise you of any specific precautions, which are minimal with modern professional products.

What If You Still See Termites After Treatment?

Seeing termite activity in the weeks immediately following treatment is normal and expected. The transfer effect takes time to work through the colony. If you are still seeing significant activity after 60 to 90 days, contact your pest control provider — a follow-up inspection and possible additional treatment may be needed to address any gaps in coverage.

Under warranty, re-treatment for continued activity is typically covered at no additional cost. Understanding the warranty terms before treatment begins is important. See our article on termite treatment warranties for details.
